Abstract [en]

Swedish industry is facing a major succession when several professionals approaching retirement age. How well a company’s succession succeed may be of great importance for the future of the company and this especially in small, owner-managed firms where the change of ownership often represents a critical moment, and where the company's success is largely tied to the manager. The relationships that the manager has accumulated with different contacts represent a core value and a competitive advantage for the company. This in turn represents a social capital which often is embedded to the owner. The transfer of social capital in successions can therefore be of great importance for a company's future. Previous studies indicate that the succession process is complex and that more studies on transferring the social capital in successions is needed. Hence, the purpose of this study is to increase understanding of successions by identifying and describing underlying mechanisms for the transfer of social capital and further analyze why these may be essential, and to develop a conceptual model that depicts these mechanisms. This study will approach the seller's perspective and to fulfill the purpose of the study previous literature and theory within the context of succession has been examined and compared to the empirical material that has been collected by 12 qualitative interviews. By studying a number of successions, insight has been given that many business relationships involves more than just business, it is based as in any other relationship of conformity in personal chemistry and earned trust. The result indicates that trust, communication and personal encounters is the most significant mechanisms for successful transferring of social capital.
