Abstract [en]

The study aims to investigate how a framework for virtual construction in a generic rock engineering project can be applied. Virtual construction is a name for methods and processes for developing object based information models. The information exchange supported by these models can be described with the standardized framework Information Delivery Manual, IDM. An IDM consists of descriptions of the process, stakeholders and their need for information exchange. Axiomatic design is used in order to develop a generic framework for object oriented modelling in rock engineering projects. The IDM can be considered as a required product where different stakeholders needs are decomposed in to functional requirements for the object based information models. A qualitative study was performed to identify and map the consumer needs and functional requirements. The identified requests were presented along with their functional requirements in tree hierarchies. These hierarchies were then mapped onto a swim lane flowchart where stakeholders and information exchange processes of the project were described. An IDM is a good tool for describing the information need in different stages of a rock engineering project. Several functional requirements turn up in multiple hier-archies and to find solutions which satisfy every need for these functional requirements will be critical. The contractual agreements need to be taken into consideration in order to distribute the responsibility for a specific information deliver. Systematic frameworks for sharing of information are a prerequisite for virtual construction to be used in such extent that it can industrialize the industry.
