Abstract [en]

This essay examines how changes in interest rates affect Swedish households. The selected factor to measure how households are affected by interest rates is the debt ratio, which shows the average debt of the Swedish households relative to disposable income. Household debt is cause to several macroeconomic reasons but the report only examines how the debt ratio is related to interest rates in Sweden. The essay uses an analytical system approach where components as the interest rates and the debt ratio is explained by from the big picture; Sweden's economy - more specific Sweden's monetary policy. By comparing these parts quantitatively, conclusions can be drawn regarding that low interest rates seem to cause a higher debt ratio, and bring the level of debt to risky levels, for the Swedish households. The life-cycle hypothesis is the main theory of the essay and helps to show how households are acting now, and in the future. The leverage-effect, ”hävstångseffekten”, is used to show that a higher debt ratio enhances the negative risks and households suffer more easily of negative effects when they have higher interest rate sensitivity.
