Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to describe elderly people's experience of using a walker in public facilities in a rural area. In order to answer the purpose a qualitative study with semi structured interviews were used. The participants were 65 years and older and used walkers. The result of the study resulted in three categories: "Older people's views on society, The usability of public buildings and The feeling of participation in the society". The study's analysis revealed that according to older individuals experience, the municipality had a logical and useful society, while obstacles and suggestions for changes emerged. The importance of managing independently and have the opportunity to be active in the community's public facilities was shown. Conclusions of the study showed the importance of being able to be active and feel involved and able to use the community and meet its requirements.
