There is strong evidence of the relationship between physical activity and the participation in organized sports being beneficial for children’s health and overall wellbeing. This is an important aspect that should be considered in the work towards equal health for all children no matter their social background. Sportoteket works towards equal health by lending sports equipment free of charge to the public. Through this, it is possible for more children and adolescents to stay physically active. The aim of this study was to explore the knowledge and experience professionals working with children in sports related activities have of Sportoteket. A qualitative method was used to address the aim and the data collection consisted of nine individual interviews with participants who all had extensive knowledge of working with children and adolescents in a sports and health environment. The collected material was analyzed through a manifest content analysis and resulted in the development of a main category; “a movement in the right direction” and four sub-categories; (1) increases physical activity and togetherness, (2) reduces differences, (3) makes a resource and (4) changes attitudes. The result of the study shows that Sportoteket does in fact increase the possibilities to try a variety of sports and in return it also strengthens the interest for trying new sports. In addition, Sportoteket breaks down the financial barriers some families face and can be seen as an important resource for schools, clubs and community youth centers. The conclusion indicates that instances such as Sportoteket can encourage physical activity and contribute to more equal opportunities in the practice of sports among children and adolescents.
