Every organization needs some kind of financing when it is about to start up its activity, and financing for new technology-based firms has become to be an important question around the world. New technology-based firms may have difficulties with financing based on high risk and the insecurity that it may bring. The purpose of this study was thereby to describe how new technology-based firms, when in start-up phase, prepare an application about external financing and by comparing some different new technology-based firms create an increased understanding for the financing issue. This study focuses on important assessment factors that organizations themselves consider are the most important to prove when applying for external financing. What significance social ties has during financing application, together with the meaning of legitimacy within new technology-based firms during external financing applications. The study was conducted as a case study by a few new technology-based firms, and the data was collected by semi-structured interviews with people within the various organizations. The study’s results shows that new technology-based firms has great awareness about the important assessment factors for financing which former studies has shown in, and above all that a new and a unique product is important. Social ties are a necessity to contain external financing, and without having the right people within the social network and if financiers not know about you and the organization it will make it almost impossible obtaining external financing. The study shows no results for new technology-based firms working to create legitimacy to increase the chance of financing granted, but some activities still match with developed theories to create legitimacy.
