Joymusic in Special Schools - Where Music Making Becomes an Ability, by Lindie Boström and Elin Grunditz, is a study which is part of the music teacher education program at Luleå University of Technology; Department of Arts, Communication and Education in Piteå. In this paper we study how Joymusic could affect or change music education in special schools. After being part of different musical contexts with children and young people with disabilities, we chose to focus on teaching music by means of the technological tool Joymusic. Joymusic is a program designed for people with disabilities that enables and increases their possibilities of making music An action research study is conducted, in which high school students from two different special schools take part. By means of 16 semi-structured interviews, in which respondents are music teachers, students and their assistants, we study how Joymusic could affect the ability to achieve the objectives of the curriculum, as well as the ability to participate and interact in music making. We find that music teachers and assistants believe that Joymusic can be a great complement to music education, but it would be even more valuable in training schools, where students are in greater need of such aids and tools. For students with learning disabilities due to physical limitations, Joymusic would be certainly helpful in achieving the goals. The students included in our research believe that they often find it easier to participate in the music making when using Joymusic, but for many of them, the program is not a necessity in order to be able to participate and interact in class.
