It is increasingly common that companies produce their own editorial content and magazines. This while many newspapers has trouble finding a financial funding and the traditional newspapers and magazines cut down on employees and shrink the newsrooms. Meanwhile, people still study in the field of journalism – and head a future of unemployment and insecurity. It’s in any case a pessimistic way of looking at it. Because fact is that more companies chooses to start their magazines will probably lead to more journalists working in this genre of journalism. An industry that has been early in the field of editorial content is the fashion industry as many fashion houses and stores have decided to produce their own magazines. But fashion journalism is often criticized for the ideals they represent. So the question that the assay explores is what happens to those ideals when fashion companies themselves create the editorial content? Is it possible to see any difference with the magazines produced by traditional publishers?Based on the theory of representation, gender and identity a quantitative survey has been conducted to measure the ideals of Nelly Magazine, NK STIL and KappAhl Life & Syle in the content genre – and Elle, Styleby and Plaza Kvinna in the publishing genre. The analysis shows that the differences are not significant, the magazines represent overall the same ideals – there is a strong ideal image of the woman as thin, successful, with long hair and in her twenties. Although we see that it’s more common for women in the content genre to be informally dressed unlike the publishing genre where it’s more common that the women are more dressed up.
