Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to get increased knowledge about the work with multilingualism in small towns. With small towns is meant where the population is less than 10,000. To get this increased knowledge, five qualitative research interviews with working pre-school teachers were carried out. The study is based on Vygotskij’s sociocultural perspective; we learn from and with each other. The analysis of the interviews led to two major factors that contribute to a successful work with multilingualism in pre-school. One of them was named Knowledge, and the other one Consciousness and Engagement. The conclusions which the study gave are that First Language as a subject needs to get more space in the pre-school. Knowledge about the first language is important for the individual’s identity development and cultural belonging, but also for knowledge development in different subjects. Development in Swedish, but also in one’s second language is essential for the individual’s integration, social development in our society, and in a later stage, also for knowledge development in different subjects. An important prerequisite for a successful pre-school activity is that the children can develop their thinking and learning in their first language, simultaneously as they get the opportunity to develop the second language. A parallel language stimulation enables an effective language acquisition in both the first language and the second language, which also increases the knowledge development in other areas.
