Difference in Surround Experience Between ITU 775 Recommendation and Consumer’s “Living Room Setup”?
2012 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

This study investigates the perceived audio quality in two 5.1 surround systems. One system follows the ITU 775 recommendation while the other is an example of a “typical home” setup that does not follow the standard. The research question is based on observations made at people’s living rooms. The attributes that are examined in this study are basic audio quality and listener envelopment. A listening test was conducted to see if there was any difference between the two systems and in that case also how big difference. It was determined that there is a significant difference in the surround experience. Both the basic audio quality and especially listener envelopment are affected by placing the speakers in a different way than recommended by the ITU 775 recommendation.
