My mission was to investigate whether there was potential to improve an existing prototype Actegra AB had developed. The prototype is a system to monitor elements of structures, such as trusses, bridges and more. This is done by reading a series of wireless sensors, which then sends the data to a gateway connected to the Internet. The gateway contains a web page where the user easily can read the data via computer or e.g. smartphone. The improvements that were needed were primarily a radio module that was also programmable and had less power consumption than the existing radio module. As parts of the system are battery powered a low power consumption is a key part. The prototype had only one IR sensor for temperature readings and Actegra AB wanted both an accelerometer and some form of strain gauge and the ability to connect additional sensors. Another part of the mission was to determine whether the hardware for the gateway could be switched to another. The reason for this was that the existing hardware had a relatively high purchase price and better alternatives existed. Finally, i would do some minor visual changes on the website that displays the data.
