Abstract [en]

The construction industry is changing and the methods to construct buildings are developedconstantly. However the construction industries is often criticized for being slow at developing and not modernize the construction processes fast enough. Something needs to be done to speed up the development and perhaps 3D printers can be an alternative in the future. This thesis aims to find out more about the new technology and its opportunities to improve the construction process.This thesis is about finding information when it comes to 3D printing and then evaluate that interms of usefulness for the construction industry. Is it possible to print different components or maybe even a large house? Is there someone who has already started using 3D printers in the construction industry? Is it possible to start using 3D printers today?To find out what is available when it comes to 3D printing the internet was scanned forinformation. After that a workshop was held at NCC in Stockholm, where the student presented the information in a presentation. This led to a discussion among the participants and the conclusion was that it would be interesting to look further into three certain areas, where 3D printers might be useful. These three areas were studied closer towards the end to see if the technology is applicable. To take the temperature on 3D printers and find inspiration a trip to 3DPrint Show 2014 in Paris was made. A questionnaire was sent out and phone interviews weremade after that to see how much the construction industry knows about the technology. Also ameeting between student, NCC and Arkitektkopia using Lync was held. An application matrixwas made to find out how some applications are situated when it comes to chosen applianceareas.The conclusion of this thesis is that 3D printers have come a long way and there are a lot tochoose from today, if you are an architect or private person. For example it is possible to printphysical models of houses or make house decorations. Construction companies in Sweden will have to wait a while before it is possible to start using 3D printers to create building components, material saving solids or print whole houses. Because prices are high and the technology needs to improve. According to the questionnaire and phone interviews some construction companiesalready have started investing in 3D printers and are performing different projects.The developments of 3D printers are fast and the interest is high among private persons anddifferent companies. China has started printing entire multistory houses with enormous 3Dprinters and is planning to make bridges and roads. NASA wants to build a moon base with thehelp of 3D printers and that is only one of the futuristic concepts that involve this technology.There are no limits when it comes to what 3D printers will create in the future.
