The aim of this study was to describe the occupational therapy fall preventions for older people with a literature review and to assess the included studies scientific evidence value. The authors of this study chose to follow Friberg (2006) model for a literature review. A literature search was done with in advance chosen search words and search word combinations in different databases. After reading the abstracts the authors chose to include the studies that complied with the inclusion criteria’s that was selected. The studies that were included were read by both authors several times and were analyzed to assess the studies scientific evidence value and a summary of what occupational therapeutic fall preventions had been carried out. The data analysis resulted in three main categories of the interventions that were carried out in relation to Kielhofner (2008) classifications of the environment and the individual. The results show that the studies that carried out fall preventions only on the environmental level came to conclusions that the environmental level is a crucial part of fall prevention and these studies were assessed to have a high scientific evidence value. The studies that carried out fall prevention on both environment and individual level all came to conclusions that it was important to look at both environmental and individual level. The studies in this category were assessed to having either medium high or low scientific evidence value. The studies that only carried out fall prevention on individual level came to conclusions that it is important to take into consideration the individuals’ point of view and that motivation is a crucial part to succeeding with fall prevention. All studies in this category were assessed to having low scientific evidence value. The conclusion the authors came to, in this study was that occupational therapy fall prevention for older people is needed on both environmental and individual level and that the participation of an occupational therapist in fall prevention is important for the fall prevention to be as effective as possible. The authors believe that further occupational therapy studies are needed in this subject, where also theoretical approaches are explored.
