The purpose of this study was to problematize the Swedish preschool's mission to ensure every child´s needs without assessing the child´s abilities in relation to language development. To answer the purpose of the study, we processed previous research and national policy documents. The study is based on qualitative interviews with six preschool teachers from two different preschools in Sweden. The interviews were conducted in three focus groups with two preschool teachers in each group. The starting point for the interpretation and analysis of the empirical data had an inductive approach. The results of this study showed that assessment is a concept that is difficult to interpret and which preschool teachers had a split approach to. Furthermore the study showed that the size of the group of children may be crucial to how well preschool teachers are able to ensure every single child´s needs in preschool.
