Abstract [en]

This thesis have been conducted at IKEA of Sweden in Älmhult. IKEA of Sweden are the product development company in the IKEA group. IKEA of Sweden consist of several Business Areas (BA). Each BA are responsible for a set of product types, everything from season articles to kitchen products. This thesis have been conducted under BA 2/5: Store and Organise / Work IKEA. The projects task have been to develop a storage unit for a printer and if possible aslo make room for a notebook / laptop to be stored and used. The work have been split into two phases: one initial information gathering phase and one concept and product visualisation phase. The information gathering phase included a interview questionnaire conducted on some of IKEA’s warehouses in the middle of Sweden. In the survey about 200 people of various age participated. The results from the survey together with other collected data was analysed and became the backbone for the concept and mock-up building. According to the results from the survey a printer furniture does need additional storage space for a smaller number of papers. Extra storage compartments for ink-cartridges are not deemed necessarily but may be benefiting to the overall worth of the product. The collected data showed that the laptop computer are used in multiple types of rooms and environments. A storage unit are thus needed to fit and work in various sets of conditions. With help of the conclusions based on the collected data several concepts was constructed. Each of the concepts were evaluated by the Product Developers at IKEA of Sweden’s BA 2/5. They evaluated how the concepts felt, the design and functions. From the initial concepts three concepts were taken to further developments. Each of them were evaluated with help of criterions. The last concepts was presented to Per Stigenius, IKEA of Sweden’s supervisor for this project, he decided which of the concepts that was of interest. The selected concept, a storage unit for the printer was then visualied in 1:1 scale mock-up. The mock-up wasthe end result of this project. However, the concept may be with further work on it of interest for IKEA. Confidential until 2010-08-28
