Abstract [en]

The purpose of my work is to illustrate and evaluate the importance education, at a montessori school, has for the development of a good number sense. The study focuses on the natural numbers of 0-20. I am a montessori teacher and work in a montessori school. Consequently it was interesting to study the education at a montessori school. The national curriculum of Sweden, the montessori method and research about number sense was studied. I focused on how pupils develop a good number sense, what the reasons are when a child does not develop a good number sense an which material teachers use in the work with number sense. Qualitative interviews of six teachers were made which were analysed from a hermeneutical perspective. The results of the study show that the teaching, the teachers choice of methods and ways of working is consistent to modern research of the area. The study also shows that laboratory work and concrete material improves the ability for a student to avoid getting into difficulties in mathematics. An important result is that screening should be done as early as possible so that the students can be provided with the support they need when they begin school to avoid difficulties in mathematics. A conclusion is that every teacher should be educated in working with screening and to have knowledge about signs of mathematical difficulties in arising.
