High speed transmission of digital audio data on regular speaker cables

Abstract [en]

Since the dawn of high fidelity audio equipment, active speakers have been considered as having superior sound quality compared to passive ones. It is then obvious that other factors than sound quality stand in the way of active systems making their way into the consumer market. Primarily it has been an issue of cost: the cost of the hardware, and the extensive cabling required, has made a crossing of active speakers to the consumer market impossible. Especially at present when, according to manufacturers, the consumer's focus has shifted from having an emphasis on sound quality towards system and cabinet size and design. The goal of this thesis project was a small part in the realization of the Actiwave-platform. Its purpose was to serve as initial research in an attempt to increase the possible speed of transmission to accommodate not only a sampling rate of 48kHz, but also rates of 96- and 192kHz, for compatibility with emerging standards like the HDMI-format. Given some design constraints, my task was to research existing techniques and standards for signal transmission and decide which technique would be most feasible.
