Conversational real-time multimedia in Java ME

Abstract [en]

The Java Platform, Micro Edition is a widely adopted technology to, in a controlled way, introduce third party developers to the otherwise inaccessible platforms in mobile phones, and at the same time allow applications to run on devices from different manufacturers. Ericsson Research would like to investigate the possibilities to develop conversational real-time services using Java ME, and thus the purpose of this report is to conduct such an investigation. A problem with developing such services in Java ME is the very limited and inconsistent support for real-time multimedia among devices. This report targets both the Java ME specifications, investigating the theoretical possibilities to support conversational real-time multimedia, as well as the currently available support in the seventh Java Platform implementation by Sony Ericsson (JP-7), with focus on video. It can be concluded that it is not possible do develop such services on the JP-7 platform available today. These conclusions are drawn from the facts that it is not possible to access captured media data in real-time, nor play a real-time video stream with acceptable performance, using the JP-7 implementation. However, the specifications does not hinder future implementations to be used for developing strongly standardized real-time communication services, with intentionally reduced possibilities to control advanced settings. More general conversational communication services would, however, require new specifications, providing better control and flexibility, to be standardized.
