Abstract [en]

This master thesis was commissioned by Scania. Which is a major truck manufacturer situated in Södertälje, Sweden. The projects goal was to generate concepts of a mudguard that would be fitted over the second front axles of trucks fitted with dual front axles. The value this kind of mudguard to Scania was also created during this project. Dual front axles are used when the load at the front of the truck is so large it has to be divided up onto two axels instead of the usual one. About 8 percent of the trucks sold by Scania are fitted with dual front axles. The project was performed by investigating the size of the market for this type of mudguard. The specifications of the trucks that would buy the mudguards was also found. Investigations were also made to understand what features this kind of mudguard should have. In addition to investigating the legal and other demands that the mudguard had to fulfill. All of the trucks that are sold with dual front axles have extra bodywork built on to them by specialized workshops. Some examples of the bodywork is a crane and a concrete pump. The bodyworks placement is unique for every application and workshop. This leads to there being large differences between the amount of space above the second front axle. It is crucial that the mudguard fits underneath the bodywork because if it can´t it will be discarded and another mudguard will be fitted. When all of the features where established and the demands where set a large amount of ideas where generated, combined, developed and evaluated. This work culminated in a single concept. This final Concept can be mounted on a large number of different heights. This means that the mudguards can be fitted snugly underneath all kinds of bodywork. It is fitted in one position by Scania and can then be easily moved. The Mudguards geometry and material was chosen to create a functional mudguard for as low a price as possible.
