A comparison between dynamic loudspeakers and plasma loudspeakers

Abstract [en]

Plasma loudspeakers have existed for quite some time, yet they are quite underutilized. Theyare unheard of even to many professional sound engineers. Ionizing the air between twoelectrodes produces a plasma, an ionized gas, that under the right circumstances can produceacoustic sound waves, making it a loudspeaker. As plasma loudspeakers differ greatly fromconventional loudspeakers and have some unique properties that might provide solutions tosound reproduction problems that conventional loudspeakers can not, there may be applicationswhere plasma loudspeakers are favorable to conventional loudspeakers. This literary review willcompare plasma loudspeakers to conventional loudspeakers to reach an understanding of thedifferent technologies and their potential.The physics and properties of both plasma loudspeakers and dynamic loudspeakers wereresearched. Using this information a comparison was be made regarding three propertiesimportant to loudspeaker design: Frequency response, directionality and sound pressure level.Using this comparison 3 examples of application are discussed where the properties of the twotechnologies was compared: Hybrid systems, PA-systems and large area coverage. Whileplasma loudspeaker technology has some limitations to overcome, among them low frequencyreproduction and hazardous by-products, this study shows beneficial properties in regards tohigh frequency reproduction, transient response, directionality and diversity.
