A company's performance is from a contingency-theoretical perspective linked to the fit between the organization and its contingency-factors. The Business model is a common denominator between businesses, as it always exists, whether expressed or not. A business model explains the logical foundation for how businesses operate and describes how companies’ captures, creates and deliver value. Furthermore, it is the link between a company and its Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, which is a vital tool within its operational function. An ERP-system is essential for many businesses and aims to create more efficient operations. Implementation of an ERP-system is a costly and complex task and linked to a high degree of failure. From the specific needs of an organization, how does companies prepare themselves for ERP-systems in order to avoid failure? The purpose of the study is therefore to, from a contingency-theoretical perspective; increase the understanding of companies’ preparation for selection and implementation of ERP-systems. An analysis model is presented in which situation, business model and critical success factors are woven together into a unified model. The purpose of the analysis model is to enable an analysis of the empirical results, which are presented in the study. An actor-oriented case study with qualitative interviews has been conducted at a locally based company within the process industry. The result of the study suggests that companies’ situations, can affect the preparatory phase for selection and implementation of ERP-systems. Depending on the situation, focus on different activities is required, or possibly even different activities entirely, in order to prepare an organization in the best possible way. The study also shows a link between the business model and ERP-systems since the business model describes what the business actually does and the ERP-system aims to capture this. The results of the study also suggest a link between situation and business model, where the business model can help to provide equivalence between the situation and ERP-system. For further research a conceptual model is presented as an initial proposal to highlight the consistency of situation, business model and ERP-systems in preparation for the selection and implementation of ERP-systems.
