"Vad är det egentligen du säger?": En kvalitativ studie om användandet av bildspråk i sångundervisning

The purpose of this study was to look into teacher’s similarities and differences in use of vocal imagery, in teaching voice with classical and afro-american orientation, focusing on their vocabulary and method in the work of technique and expression. I also wanted to see how the voice students responded to their teacher's instructions.Altogether four voice lessons were observed, where of two with a classical approach and two with an afro-american approach. These were followed by qualitative research interviews with the participating pupils. Colour coding was used to analyze the empiric material.The results shows that all of the observed teachers used vocal imagery when teaching, especially in the work with vocal technique. There were differences between the two orientations in the use of vocal imagery both in frequency and vocabulary when working with vocal technique, while the main similarities were to be found in the teachers work with vocal expression and textual content. The results also shows that the participating pupils considered their teachers instructions to be of great help. However, these instructions can easily be forgotten when practicing and there is also a risk that the pupils will not understand the physiological purpose of the instructions when using vocal imagery.
