Today the detail design section at BAE Systems Hägglunds in Örnsköldsvik works digitalized with 3D models and data in a wide extension in order to create detail design instructions. The functions that follow after detail design, like production preprocessing and production, have not yet made the move to be able to receive and use this kind of digitalized data and the paper based drawing is therefore still an important variable. To switch over to a digitalized flow of data from detail design to production could lead to a significant increase in efficiency and shorter lead times in the product development process.The purpose of this master thesis was to investigate what solutions are available on the market today and how these would look and function at BAE Systems Hägglunds. The master thesis would also investigate what advantages and disadvantages that are connected to these solutions and also what additional costs and savings there are. The master thesis has been focused on the final assembly process at the company in Örnsköldsvik.To meet the purposes an extensive current situation analysis was made along with an environmental analysis. During the current situation analysis the creating and use of the work instructions for production were mapped together with the problems that the staff experience. A clear problem was that it takes a lot of effort to keep the work instructions up to date as these are paper based. During the environmental analysis it was investigated how similar companies work with digital work instructions and what advantages and disadvantages those companies had experienced when changing over to this way of working. It was also investigated which software solutions for making this kind of instructions that are available on the market today. Two of the software solutions were chosen for further evaluation where interface, functions, updating, import and export were tested.The master thesis led to a recommendation that BAE Systems Hägglunds should move over to digitalized work instructions for production. This could be done in a first move by collecting all documents including drawings in the enterprise resource system SAP that is used at the company. By creating a web-based interface that could be used by the assemblers and introduce tablets or such at the assembly line this could replace the thick binders that are used today, and the work instructions could be updated fast and easily. As an extension a software solution for creating work instructions with 3D representations could be introduced. In this way the production preprocessing could be based on 3D models and the 2D drawings for the final assembly would no longer be necessary.
