Abstract [en]

Many studies are today using contrast agents in x-ray examinations, it can lead to contrast induced nephropathy (CIN). Sodium bicarbonate has been shown to be a suitable option for hydration against CIN. Objective: Our aim with this study is to investigate whether sodium bicarbonate is the better hydration alternative compared with sodium chloride for prophylaxis against CIN for patients with renal impairment. We formulated three questions at issue based on our purpose. Our literature review includes 21 scientific articles that we found through searching various databases. Our study showed that sodium bicarbonate does not outmatch sodium chloride as a hydration alternative against CIN for patients with renal impairment. It was found that the combination of sodium bicarbonate and sodium chloride is better than just sodium chloride alone. N-acetylcysteine plus sodium chloride was superior as hydration alternative in comparison with N-acetylcysteine plus sodium bicarbonate against CIN. Our conclusion is that sodium bicarbonate can be a good choice for hydration as prophylaxis against CIN for patients with renal impairment.
