In Sweden, SMEs combine for 99, 4% of the total number of companies and thefinancing situation of these companies can in many cases be limited to banks decisionmaking. In order to finance the company’s start-up stage and continued survival, itrequires an approved loan application. In our study, we have identified signals andfactors such as the borrower (SMEs) send to the lender (banks), these are then classed ascentral to a particular outcome. These signals, we have chosen to distribute into 4 areas, management and personal characteristics, market, financial measures and the bank’swork process. Adverse selection and moral hazard problems are something that affectsSMEs and the bank’s work process at which a decision will be taken. The reason forthese problems is information asymmetry. Therefore, it creates trust problems betweenlenders and borrowers, and signals are sent from the borrower to convince the lenderabout the company’s potential and future success. The thesis aims to increase knowledge and understanding of the areas that increaseSMEs ability to obtain financing. The thesis also aims to increase knowledge about howthe bank official’s working process look like and what affects the individual’s decision.Through a qualitative study with repertory grid method, we have collected informationfrom people involved in the bank’s decision-making when it comes to financing SMEs.The study shows that the credit assessment of small businesses is characterized by anumber of areas that have a significant impact, in particular management. Through thecompany’s expertise and financial position together with the personal characteristics ofthe company management the bank officer could affect the agency problem that existsin the relationship between business and banking.
