Countdown To Zero: En diskursanalytisk dekonstruktion
Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
This essay is a discourse analysis of the American documentary Countdown to Zero from 2010. It’s a film about nuclear bombs and the threat that these weapons pose to the human existence. Its explicit goal is further more to inform the viewer about this threat and emphasize a global call to action to end nuclear proliferation. My results however show that this goal to a significant degree gets distorted and neglected as a result of the films nationalistic and conflict driven worldview. As the film did not communicate the type of message that I was expecting I was intrigued to find explanations for this. The essay addresses what the different factors are that gives the documentary film its specific voice in general and the voice of Countdown to Zero in particular. It investigates how and why the film is produced in its specific way and how this affects the message it is trying to get across to the viewer.
