Currently the department of external production at BAE Systems Hägglunds is working with production support for suppliers of Build- to-Print components. An increasing part of BAE Systems' products are designed by BAE Systems engineers while manufacturing is carried out by suppliers. This shift has created a need for BAE Systems to support suppliers in the production process in order to ensure the quality. Production support also becomes important as there is a need to ensure product quality before the actual arrival to BAE Systems factory. The current workprocess for production support has grown from different suppliers temporary needs instead of being develop for a specific purpose. This has led to a situation where there is no standardized way of working or communicating with suppliers. Therefore, there is a desire to find tools and methods that can be applicable to support all suppliers in a standardized process.The purpose of this study is to create a standardized process with tools that can be applicable to all suppliers of Build- to-Print components. All types of quality deviations shall be handled by the same tools while the working methodology should be able to prevent quality problems. The thesis will result in a practical solution that is grounded in the latest research and development and can be applicable to BAE Systems organization.To fulfill this goal, a comprehensive analysis of the present working methods and organization at BAE Systems has been made. An analysis of supplier’s organization and “state-of-affairs” has also been made. This was followed by an investigation of quality deviations and root - cause- analysis at BAE Systems. The results show that there was great potential for improvement and that the current methodology focused on dealing with problems instead of preventing them. This happened because of the difficulty in finding the root-cause of quality deviations and the problems to measure the underlying factors. Lack of time also made it more difficult to correct deviations when identified.The result of the thesis is a recommendation to external production to begin using a new computer system to automate documentation preparation for production. It is also recommended to implement the balanced scorecard as the standard tool for working with suppliers. Through this combination of solutions will created a better standard for the production support team that can be applied for all suppliers.
