The focus of my research is to find out which building blocks and aspects that can create a so called “groove” in an ensemble.I have interviewed a number of well-known, today active, jazz musicians, to take part of their view on the concept of groove, and what building blocks they regard as essential to achieve this. After that I have presented these interview-responses in a selected jazz-trio, where I am an integral part as bass player.During a period of four weeks, the trio has rehearsed a number of songs, which at each occasion have been recorded. After each recording, the trio has listened, analyzed and discussed whether the music has had a groove, and also connected this to the interview responses, which have served as guidance. This research resulted in a concert, where the trio was extended to a quartet by the clever Kjell Öhman, who took part in two of the four recordings that were documented during the research. The trio has been analyzing the differences between the four recordings, to find out how we have conducted ourselves to a fourth musician and improved during these four weeks.I have by recordings, interviews and discussions found out that some of the most important building blocks that make the foundation to the desirable groove, are timing, melodious interplay, a sensitive ear and, above all, humbleness.
