Abstract [en]

The introduction of IP based communication media utilising Voice over IP technology sparked the release of the first Unified Communications solution, a novel way of integrating disparate communication channels into a single interface. UC quickly demonstrated itself to be a disruptive technology to businesses in the telecommunications industry that were previously used to dealing exclusively with voice metadata. This continuing shift forces businesses to redesign their information systems in an effort to integrate UC solutions and the metadata they generate into existing systems.The purpose of this thesis is to show how Ciceronen Telecom AB, a small business in this field, can restructure its database solution to process UC metadata and thereby remain competitive. The results of this work show that a data warehousing approach meets the highest priority requirements while making advanced reporting possible to the business’ customers. The conclusion is that by initiating a software development project aimed at restructuring existing IS architecture, an SME such as Ciceronen Telecom AB can successfully adapt to disruptive technology. Although the resulting artefacts of this work are specific to Ciceronen Telecom AB, the underlying principles and methodological approaches used can be made generalizable and thus help enable system development projects in businesses that face similar situations.
