Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to provide a better understanding of how teachers work with pupils´ ability to concentrate in the classroom. What methods do they use, do they plan their daily activities with consideration of the pupils´ concentration level and what difficulties and challenges do they experience when working with the pupils´ ability to concentrate? In the background section, the socio-cultural perspective on learning related to pupils´ concentration in class, is presented. The background also presents how the brain functions during concentration demanding work and what research has discovered regarding the relationship between concentration and physical movement. One section of this report deals with how the subject of concentration has been regarded in school throughout history and how teachers´ work with pupil concentration has developed. The study is based on a qualitative research where six different active teachers were interviewed. Their interview responses have given valuable knowledge contributing to the results of this study. All six of the interviewed teachers have in common that they point out the importance of getting to know the group and the pupils. Recurring, according to the literature used and to the interviewees, factors to a good level of concentration in school are for pupils to feel interest, motivation and meaningfulness.
