This master thesis has been carried out and written during spring semester 2013 at Xylem incorporation. Xylem is developing, manufacturing and promoting pump solutions for safe water resources, wastewater and industrial applications. With their expertise from market-leading innovation in the water industry, they are focused on developing highly efficient water technologies with lower energy consumption and water solutions that provide environmental benefits to users and communities.The purpose of the project was to make a sound proofing study of a wastewater pump manufactured by Xylem, within their brand Flygt. Most of the time wastewater pumps get installed submerged under water. However, it is getting more common to install the pumps in a dry environment. A lot of benefits come with dry placed pumps. You will get a better overview of the pumps and it will provide a more pleasant environment for technicians. With submerged pumps, water is acting sound insulating. Dry placed pumps do not have water around themself and this leads to ahigh noise level inside the pump station; one of the big disadvantages with this type of installation. Some customers have complained about high noise levels and this is the background for the master thesis. This master thesis within Industrial Design Engineering describes how you could work through a design process to reduce the sound level in a pump station. The project started with a pre-study and a thorough plan step by step on how to reach the final design. After a rigorous collection of data the current situation was set and analyzed. When the current situation was set and after a lot of sound and vibration measurements, analyzing of the results and calculations; a problem could be described. The measurements were made in a pump station in Uthamra, Vallentuna. This description led to a concept development process. The development work was done systematically, and delivered a design acting as a sound proofing case for wastewater pumps and a tool developed in Excel that could be used by salesmen at Xylem. The salesmen can use this tool to predict the sound level inside pump stations, but it can also be used to analyze how the sound level could be reduced with alterations to the pump and pump station.In order to ensure and compare calculations with reality, a prototype of an acoustic enclosure were built in the specific pump station. Calculations and measurements on an acoustic enclosure, shows that the sound pressure level in the reverberant field can be reduced with about 4 dB(A).
