This final-year project work has been performed for the consulting company Rejlers in Skellefteå. The work is about explaining the function of protective relays especially distance relays, perform relay protection settings for a distance relay and develop a program to test the functions of the protective relay.The aim of the protective relays is to protect the power system and there are several different types of protective relays that have different tasks. The distance relay protects power transmission lines and the surrounding equipment.The relay protection philosophy has stayed the same over the years. To get the best possible protection system one needs to consider different factors: reliability, selectivity, simplicity, speed and economy. There are many different approaches and answers to this complex task.Distance protection is different from other relay protection because it measures the impedance of a line to determine the fault location. The settings have been made based on the data that was available and have next been sent to the relay protection to enable tests on relay protection.A semi-automatic program has been developed in the test equipment software to enable testing of the relay protection. The test was performed to verify that the relay protection settings were correct.
