The aim of this study was to see what users with cognitive impairments experience as difficult when using IT systems and the reasons for these difficulties. Hopefully these findings can contribute to user-friendly IT solutions for users with cognitive impairments. According to The Swedish Institute of Assistive Technology (SIAT) adjustments are currently being made, but mainly to improve usability for people with physical disabilities. Interviews were conducted with respondents who had been diagnosed with a cognitive impairment. Since previous studies have pointed out memory as the cause of problems in the use of everyday technology the focus of this study was memory and related problems. The study showed that users with cognitive impairments are experiencing problems with the use of IT systems and that the main problems are associated with the working memory and its functionality. All respondents stated having trouble orientating and filtering out relevant information. The findings indicated that IT systems should be adapted so that the constraints associated with the working memory are made up for. If not, the users might otherwise have difficulties pursuing the errand they set out to fulfil due to frustration and disorientation.
