Outotec is a global leader in minerals and metals processing technology, and has over the years developed several groundbreaking technologies for this. Besides technologies in mineral and metal processes, Outotec are also developing innovative solutions for industrial water treatment, use of alternative energy sources and technology for the chemical industry.In one of the technologies, a roaster, a feed system for feeding copper concentrate is used. The copper concentrate is abrasive and has high moisture content. That along with process gas containing arsenic places high demands on the feed solution in terms of functionality and reliability. The feed solution used today is, because of the high demands, expensive. Engineers at Outotec suspected that a cheaper solution with similar functionality and reliability could exist on the market or be designed. The objective of this master thesis was therefore as follows;"The objective of this master thesis is to evaluate different feeders and based on specific criteria, choose the best fitted for Outotec's needs. Besides the main objective above, a secondary objective is to create a documented basis of different feeder solutions for future product requests and product development."The result of the primary object is a feeder named Spiralmatare. It comprises of a hopper leading to two screw troughs. In these are two helical screws driven by frequency controlled electric motors. Concentrate is fed through the screw troughs up to and through a Sankey lock and into the roaster via a niche. A new design of the gas seal requires less monitoring equipment which reduces the cost of monitoring by 18 % compared to the present solution. With frequency-controlled electric motors instead of hydraulic driven operating cost is reduced by 96 %. The design has fewer parts and is simpler, which reduces manufacturing costs by 66 %. The total cost of Spiralmataren is 31 % lower than the present solution while reliability and functionality are maintained and in some parts improved.From concept development and market surveys the secondary objective has been completed. A database with a number of different feed solutions, both interesting but also rejected, have been documented. The database can be consulted by engineers at Outotec in conjunction with customer requests and future product development projects for concentrate feeding.
