The environmental issues such as global warming has become more evidentover the past decades and we need to break the current trend in order to create amore sustainable society. To reduce the energy use in the building stock, theconstruction of low energy buildings is a step in the right direction. Skellefteåmunicipality has in the latest years invested in the construction of energyefficient buildings, primarily in preschools. To know if investments in lowenergybuildings are more economical in the long run, assessment of life cyclecosts has been developed. Two different preschools have been compared, onelow-energy preschool and one preschool built according to standard.Since user’s behaviour have an impact on the energy use an observational andquestionnaire study has been made on the staff working at the low-energypreschool and at the standard preschool in order comparing behavioursbetween the two preschools. Skellefteå municipality is also interested inknowing how spaces are used in the preschool premises. If there are unusedparts that can be excluded in future pre-school projects. This has also been apart of the observational- and questionnaire study.The lifecycle costs estimations have several uncertainties regarding the input,for example interest rates, inflation rate and future energy price. This resultedin a variety of scenarios showing different results. If the energy prices rise inthe future it will be economically profitable for Skellefteå municipality to buildlow-energy preschools. If the prices is unchanged the results depends on thescenario and what type of life cycle cost method you choose.The social aspects, also affects the amount of energy used and hence theprofitability for the end result. The results of the analysis show that the staffworking in the low-energy preschool has a more energy-conscious behaviourcompared with the staff of the standard preschool.
