Johann Ulrich Steigleder1593-1635from: Ricercar Tabulatura, 1624 I. Ricercar in d II. Ricercar in e III. Ricercar in F IV. Ricercar in G V. Ricercar in aSteigleder's first five ricercari form a group which can be understood as a metacomposition, i.e. a continuous development can be perceived from Ricercar I to V (all of which are four-voiced) after which another group follows (Ricercar VI to XII, all of which are three-voiced). This interesting collection is, therefore, in addition to being a treatise on what Steigleder considers the ricercar to be, but also a cycle of works containing two parts. The first part (I to V) is also played in its entirety in this presentation
Konsert i St Patrick's Cathedral, Ballarat, AustralienDr Gary Verkade introduces and plays this first collection of pieces to be published using copper plates, to be written using five line staves rather than letters and to use keys rather than modes. These twelve ricercare - one including an interlude based on the call of a cuckoo, explore a wide range of techniques and models.
