Abstract [en]

The aim of this bachelor thesis has been to examine and develop our own understanding about how young people in Sweden (16-29 years of age), take part in cultural activities. As librarians it is important to know what kind of activities and interests this particular group has. With Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical framework towards habitus and capital we are interested to see if there is a connection between one’s cultural use and background, if different access to capital with or within groups has an affect or not. With both statistics and interviews with people within our target, we believe this data has been sufficient enough to conduct a good and valid study. After selecting a few fields in cultural use we examined them further with help from Bourdieu and the statistical data we gathered. Further we also examined what the library eventually can do to prosper a more encouraging culture when it comes to participation among young people. The analysis showed that activity such as visiting the library has decreased, and when asking the target of our study, this data was also confirmed. Nevertheless we also gained new understanding and results as this group is a very transparent and open one. For further research we think that professionals working in this field have to get a deeper and broader understanding in order to be able to satisfy young people’s cultural needs.
