Stockholm University, Faculty of Humanities, Department of Ethnology, History of Religions and Gender Studies, Gender Studies.
2012 (English)In: Dimensions of pain: humanities and social science perspectives / [ed] Lisa Folkmarson Käll, London & New York: Routledge, 2012, p. 60-71Chapter in book (Refereed)
Abstract [en]

Vulvar vestibulitis is a painful genital condition, mostly affecting young women. Vestibulitis and other painful conditions in the vulvar area can be life altering, especially in regard to sexual practice, one's body and relationships. This chapter explores how cultural norms of gender and sexuality interact with physical pain in the experiences and interpretations of vulvar pain among affected women. The concept of pain is used to grasp as well bodily as social aspects of suffering from vulvar pain. In the chapter themes as bodily pain, shame, clothing, sexual practice and sexual strategies are discussed.
