From crisis to campaign : A qualitative content analysis of Jimmie Åkesson's speech to the nation after the revelation about troll factories (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In May 2024, TV4‘s Kalla Fakta publishes the documentary Undercover i Trollfabriken, in which it is revealed that the Sweden Democrats’ communications department has been involved in running anonymous accounts on social media that spread, among other things, offensive messages. The investigation attracted a lot of attention, and in response the Sweden Democrats chose to publish a defense speech on YouTube in which party leader Jimmie Åkesson responded to the accusation. The purpose of the study is to create an understanding of how the Sweden Democrats handle a crisis and how they combine defense strategies with populist messages. The study is carried out with a qualitative content analysis where Jimmie Åkesson's speech to the nation is analyzed based on the theories Image Repair Theory and populism. The study’s results show that the Sweden Democrats employ an attention-grabbing strategy. A lack of strategies, such as apologizing or taking compensatory actions, is identified, reflecting Åkesson’s stance on the issue: he does not believe that he or his party has done anything wrong. Instead, the focus is on counterattacking accusers and political opponents. The goal is to shift the narrative and turn a crisis into a platform for political gain. This is achieved by integrating populist messages into the crisis strategy, primarily with an anti-elitist and people-centric appearance.
