A norm-critical analysis of " Socialt arbete - en grundbok" (English)
Abstract [en]

This study present a norm-critical analysis of a Swedish social work academic textbook. The aim is to make visible how norms can be created and maintained through written text, but also to analyze whether the current book is inclusive in its language. The study also aim to analyze how the authors write about and portray, for example, gender, sexuality, ethnicity and functionality. The analysis uses a number of discourse analytical tools and focus on norms and normalization processes. The study makes use of a social constructivist perspective and queer theory. An initial quantification of the use of sex-based and gender-neutral pronouns is supplemented by an analysis of these occasions, where the discursive tools are used.

In conclusion, the study's results can show how norms about sex, sexuality, ethnicity and functionality can be created and reproduced through text. Because there is only room for two sexes and heterosexuality, the view on gender is maintained as a binary category and heterosexuality as the "normal". The result also shows how clients are categorized and presented as "the other", which contributes to how social workers look at different groups, individuals and social problems.
