Abstract [en]

Stress-related illnesses are major reasons for long-term sick leave and sickness in general in Sweden. The purpose of this qualitative interview study was to get a better understanding of how agroup of middle-managers in elderly care facilities experience their psychosocial work environment. Using the demand-control-support model, the results show that working as a middle-manager in healthcare is an ”active” job. This means that it requires a great deal of knowledge and proffessionalism to meet the high mental demands that comes with the job. Service and health care must be equally good both day and night, summer and winter, christmas day and an ordinary Tuesday. For example, If the employee possess the qualities needed to meet these demands, and also has a strong social support from colleagues, managers as well as from friends and family the risk of burnout and other stress-related illnesses aresignificantly lower than otherwise. Although, the results also show that the level of stress and the positioning in the demand-control model is fairly individual, two middle-managers at different workplaces, but with the same workload and job assignments can experience demands, control and support in different ways. Their way to balance work and other aspects of life like family and leisure activities, as well as their different work places in general can play a role in how they experience stress.
