Abstract [en]

This study examines the cleaning routines in public toilets in Umeå city, Sweden and the adequacy of them. One purpose is to find out if the cleaning routines and methods are good enough to maintain a sufficient hygienic standard. To find out what people think about public toilets a survey was conducted with 100 people. Two different interviews took place, one with the property owners and one with the cleaning staff. Totally there were eleven toilet facilities, five were municipally owned. Two different tests were taken, agar imprints and an ATP-test but also a visual control. According to the interviews there are some differences between the hygienic routines and the methods of cleaning the toilets. The tests showed that the lowest amount of bacteria colonies was 2 and the highest was 936. The lowest level of ATP was 7 RLU and the highest was 278 RLU. The visual control showed that five of eleven public toilets would be approved. Based on the results there were not differences of the adequacy of the hygienic routines between municipally and privately owned toilets. It was not possible to find any connection between hygienic routines and the amount of bacteria colonies or level of ATP. The suggestions that can be given are that the cleaning staff should be aware of how the cleaning should be performed and how important it is to use the correct methods. Cleaning of public toilets should be done several times a day and the cleaning staff should provide toiletries.
