Abstract [en]
In today's society, many aspects of life are digitized. Research indicates that use of digital technologies can lead to feelings of insufficiency and lowered self-esteem. However, the knowledge about how digital disconnection can affect women's self-esteem is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to explore young women's perceived self-esteem in relation to digital disconnection. The research question guiding the study was: “How do young women perceive their self-esteem in relation to digital disconnection?”. To investigate this, an exploratory approach was applied, utilizing four focus group sessions where the participants expressed their experience and reflections on digital disconnection and its impact on their perceived self-esteem. The study was based on the theoretical frameworks of mediatization, digital disconnection and sociometer theory in order to understand the complex relationship between technology and self-esteem. The results revealed an ambivalence where women's perception of self-esteem in relation to digital disconnection was multifaceted, influenced by both positive and negative reflections. In addition, established routines and addiction played a significant role. This ambivalence underscores the need to view digital disconnection as an individualized and context-dependent process, which summarizes the study's most significant conclusion. The findings are relevant not only in the context of media and communication studies, but in a broader societal perspective, as they highlight the connection between technology and individual well-being.
