Stone & Soil — A Latent Architectural Potential?
KTH, Skolan för arkitektur och samhällsbyggnad (ABE), Arkitektur.
2024 (Engelska)Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
Abstract [en]

25 million tonnes of stone waste is expected to be generated yearly from construction sites and tunnel projects in Stockholm until 2030. What happens with those materials today, and how can their potential for circular re-use best be activated within architecture? Since 2023, the City of Stockholm has opened a facility, the Masslogistikcenter (MLC), for the sorting and treatment of these masses. With this as a starting point, and taking inspiration both from contemporary stone architecture in Europe — in particular the IBAVI social-housing programme on Mallorca, Spain and the project Social-housing 2104 by Harquitectes — and from Bengt Lindroos’ study of the Swedish vernacular, we can find a clue towards a possible use; by mixing the stones with concrete we can simultaneously utilise the material’s latent potential for re-use, reduce concrete’s carbon footprint, and create a dynamic new material. The project aims to imagine a possible process of production for the new material adapted to Stockholm’s urban context, to approximately explore its potential to reduce the carbon footprint of the concrete industry, and to present an architectural proposal for student housing on a relevant site that also contains constructive detail examples of the material translated to the Swedish context.
