This study examines how Swedish cultural journalists and critics define the concept of culture in relationship with their position on the field of cultural journalism. Specifically the study defines the concept of culture in light of the recent debate among cultural journalists in Sweden about Aftonbladets new initiative to introduce plus rating on their reviews of literature, art and theater. The study is structured through a case study design and uses qualitative thematic text analysis as a method. The study's theoretical framework which the study relies on consists of Bourdieu's field theory (1998) and Fornäs definitions of culture (2012). The result identifies three definitions of the concept of culture. These were culture is complex, culture is not a product and culture is education. The definition culture is complex is understood as referring to the richness and variety in cultures' qualitative elements. The definition culture is not a product is understood as culture being in opposition to the economic market. Lastly the definition culture is education highlights the cultural journalists specifically the critics role in educating the public about cultural values. These definitions were put in relation to the positions on the cultural journalistic field, where journalists with positions in the cultural sectors saw the plus rating as a change in the values of their cultural capital.
