The effect of massage on pain in patients with cancer. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Cancer is a disease often associated with pain, which can be caused by the tumors but also by the different treatments and medical examinations the patients must endure. Massage has been utilized for many years to relieve pain and has lately been introduced in the care of patients with cancer.

Aim: To describe how massage can be used to relieve pain in patients with cancer and also the emerged effects.

Methods: The study has been designed as a literature review consisting of 17 qualitative and quantitative articles. Data was collected in the databases CINAHL and PubMed.

Results: Several studies proved a statistically significant decrease in pain after a massage intervention. Even though the short-term effect was more prominent some studies indicated that the massage intervention could have an enduring effect as well. In those studies where statistical significance couldn’t be measured, yet a trend could be seen that pain was reduced.

Conclusion: Massage may have beneficial effects on pain among patients with cancer. It could be considered for pain relief as a complement to pharmacological treatment.
