Growth companies in the start-up phase : from fog and darkness to relationship leaps (English)
Abstract [en]

The importance of high-technology growth companies is emphasized throughout the Western World. In Sweden an industrial company with proprietary products, which achieves sales of SEK 1 billion, only emerges about once every ten years. There are constantly more than 1,000 companies with the potential and ambition to expand, however, which indicates the difficulty and complexity in developing high-tech manufacturing companies.

The growth of companies can be described as the alternation between dynamic and consolidation phases. Growth often occurs in steps between plateaus. The plateaus can be considered as growth walls that must be broken through to achieve additional expansion.

This research project analyses and interprets the development process of high-tech industrial companies during the first plateau of their life cycle. The report, which deals with both failures and successes, is based on retrospective case studies of six Swedish companies. In addition, six other Swedish companies are studied through active participation in the companies' operations during several years.

Regarding the establishment of high-tech growth companies, the report describes a complex reality that can be interpreted in a number of ways. Internally, the operations of the companies are chaotic.
