Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Abstract

Statistics shows that the group of Arabic-speaking students in Sweden is large, which makes it interesting to pay attention to and understand the school's prerequisites for supporting these students. The aim of the study is to contribute with knowledge about language development work in the subject of mathematics. Knowledge is given in the social dimensions of language and the role of language development in learning while clarifying the interaction between language and mathematical understanding based on prior knowledge and research. The theoretical framework consists of three perspectives on special education, categorical, relational and dilemma perspectives. The method has both a qualitative and quantitative approach and the collection method is web-based. Results, analysis and discussion eventuate in some conclusions: one is that teachers' viewpoints on education can be categorized into the dilemma perspective; another is that teachers show a categorical approach to the role of language tutor and mother tongue teacher, and a third is that perceived time shortages could hamper development towards a relational perspective on learning. The study is of a minor nature regarding the response rate and extent, the reader should take that into consideration.
