The impact of ownership structure on dividends : A study about ownership categories and ownership concentration in Swedish listed firms. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The case of dividends has been researched a lot and for a long time with varied results. Some researchers question the very existence of dividends, while some claim that dividend is a tool for control for the owners. By finding variances in the different types of owners and in the ownership concentration, we might find the very reason for the use of dividend.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to examine the impact of ownership structure on dividend policy on listed firms in Sweden. We want to look for variances in companies paying dividend that is in the control of different types of owners.

Method: In this study we have applied a quantitative method and using a deductive research approach. The study includes companies that have paid dividends during 2014 and were listed on NASDAQ OMX STOCKHOLM Large-, Mid- and Small-Cap. The data was collected from the companies’ annual reports and were then analyzed through statistical tests.

Conclusion: Ownership concentration seems to be the explanation for less dividend payout in our study. The larger the voting capital the five largest shareholders possess, the lower the dividend will be from the company they own. The same goes for the single largest shareholder. Family and foreign owners seem to have a negative correlation when their voting ownership increases. When institutional and company owners are in control of the company using their voting rights, they seem to have a positive correlation with the dividend yield. Our results point to the fact that different types of owners use dividend for their own motives.
