Abstract [en]

Purpose: A transition to electric freight will challenge current systems and business models, especially for logistics service providers (LSP). Therefore, the purpose is to increase the understanding of critical factors in business models for LSPs when adopting to electrified freight.

Design/methodology/approach: A structured interview study has been carried out, targeting LSPs about their experience and expectation on electrification. The responses were analysed through a business model lens.

Findings: Twelve factors deemed as critical were identified, covering the different components of a business model. From the analysis of critical factors, four hypotheses were developed. The hypotheses concern areas that can guide designs of future business models.  

Research implications: This study identifies challenges highlighted by LSPs as relevant and combine these in critical factors to be considered when designing business model for electrified freight.

Practical implications: For many companies, business models are vital to their existence, thus the results can shed light on factors of high relevance for companies in a transport-related context.

Social implications: Large-scale adoption of electric trucks has the potential to reduce the climate impact, but it is of essence to develop sound business plans, which this study contributes to.

Original/value: This paper takes a business model approach, and builds on in-depth primary data from LSP’s experiences with regional electrified freight – a novel area in need of development.

Abstract [en]

Purpose Contradictory sustainability priorities and interests among supply chain actors can be challenging in the transition towards greener transportation. Several of these contradictions can be described as paradoxes, e.g., interests that are logical in themselves, but becomes irrational when perceived together. This study aims at increasing the understanding of paradoxes in transport buyers’ and suppliers’ strive towards greener transportation. Design/methodology/approach An interview study targeting transport buyer-supplier dyads has been applied, followed by an analysis with a point of departure in the paradox theory. Findings Tensions related to performing, belonging, learning, and organizing paradoxes in the greening of transportation have been identified. The tensions arise both within individual companies and within dyads. An explanatory framework with four loci of tensions and related propositions are suggested. Research limitations/implications By identifying examples through the lens of paradoxes in the particular setting, the study provides increased understanding to why the transition towards green transportation goes slow, despite involved actors’ high ambitions. Practical implications Understanding paradoxes is a necessary first step, before identifying ways to manage contradictions in the greening of transportation. Social implications The study provides deep insights on the challenges regarding the greening of transportation, which is fundamental for a long-term sustainable society during global crises. Original/value This study is original as it applies paradox theory within the field of green transportation, and in particular as a lens in studying the interactions between different actors.

Abstract [sv]

Inom ramen för det VINNOVA-finansierade projektet ”Hållbar distribution i e-handeln: Hur kan klimatsmarta leveransalternativ underlättas” (HELSMART) har syftet varit att ta fram kunskap om hur e-handlare kan utforma och presentera klimatsmarta leveransalternativ till konsumenter för att minimera klimatpåverkan från e-handelsdistributionen, och på så sätt bidra till ett fossilfritt samhälle. I denna rapport presenteras resultaten från projektet, som pågått under 2020-2023 och som varit ett samarbete mellan Linköpings Universitet och Stockholms Universitet. 

Projektet har kombinerat olika datainsamlingsmetoder, vilket gett möjlighet att förstå utmaningen med hållbara e-handelsleveranser ur olika perspektiv. Metoderna inkluderar dels en genomgång av e-handlares hemsidor, dels fallstudier och intervjuer med e-handlare, logistikföretag och transportplattformsföretag, och dels konsumentdata från faktiska köp före och efter introduktionen av ”miljömärkning” av leveranser. Sammantaget har det här projektet följt utvecklingen av miljömässigt hållbar e-handelsdistribution i en svensk kontext under de senaste nästan fyra åren. 

Resultaten visar att det finns en enorm komplexitet kopplat till miljömässigt hållbara leveransalternativ. För att belysa denna komplexitet så presenteras i rapporten en process som beskriver tre steg för att kunna utforma och presentera klimatsmarta leveransalternativ till konsumenter. Dessa innefattar: 

  1. Identifiera miljömässigt hållbara leveransalternativ, 
  2. Erbjuda miljömässigt hållbara leveransalternativ till konsumenter, och 
  3. Vägleda konsumenters val av miljömässigt hållbara leveransalternativ. 

Genomgång av de tre stegen leder sedan fram till en avslutande diskussion där fyra centrala budskap lyfts. För det första är det inte självklart vad som menas med miljömässigt hållbar leverans. Här finns t.ex. oklarheter i vad man är ute efter att minimera när man vill uppnå miljömässigt hållbara leveranser, och om och hur det går att jämföra olika logistikföretags utsläpp på ett rättvisande sätt. För det andra så befinner sig e-handlarna inte i ett vakuum utan är beroende av andra aktörer, vilket gör att de slutgiltiga utsläppen beror på beslut från en mängd olika och starkt skilda beslutsfattare. För det tredje så skapar externa märkningar transparens, samtidigt som de riskerar att skapa förvirring. För samtidigt som externa märkningar har sina fördelar, så kan de också leda till att för många typer av miljömässigt hållbara leveransalternativ kommuniceras parallellt. För det fjärde så visar resultaten att hållbara leveransalternativ är viktiga för konsumenter, men inte lika viktigt som allt annat. Men genom att placera det miljömässigt hållbara leveransalternativet högst upp i checkouten och markera det som förvalt, så ökar sannolikheten för att konsumenter ska välja detta alternativ. Små knuffar på tillräckligt många kan på sikt ha enormt stor effekt på totala utsläpp.

Abstract [en]

Closed-loop supply chains (CLSCs) are an important response to pressing sustainability challenges. However, they bring about tradeoffs like increased resource use in logistics. Addressing these complexities, digital platforms emerge as promising, yet under-researched, tools for efficiency enhancement in CLSCs. This study investigates three digital platforms facilitating furniture and household item trade in relation to CLSCs. A comprehensive framework, rooted in literature on CLSCs, digital platforms, and logistics, guides the analysis. The findings reveal diverse sustainability potentials within these platforms, primarily driven by system design, scale, and actor engagement. The efficacy of the digital platform varies based on usage patterns, their geographical scope, logistic solutions, and providers. Crucially, environmental and social sustainability tradeoffs and benefits come to light, offering insights into their emergence based on system design. This study provides insights for practitioners and scholars, regarding potentials/risks of trade-offs in environmental and social sustainability dimensions related to the use of digital platforms for trading secondhand furniture. It provides a nuanced understanding of how these differ depending on system design.

Abstract [en]

The implementation of urban consolidation centres (UCCs) can improve urban freight distribution and reduce negative environmental and social externalities in urban transport. Several forms of UCC initiatives have been implemented worldwide. However, initiatives often fail to reach their full potential and long-term viability. Important aspects for successful implementation and long-term viability are strong business models that include suitable forms of interaction between involved stakeholders of urban freight solutions. The overall aim of this chapter is to increase the understanding of UCCs as an urban freight initiative, and to provide state-of-the-art examples from practice on how some of the most central challenges are managed. This chapter elaborates on the benefits and challenges of UCCs. The characteristics of different forms of UCCs are described and illustrated with present initiatives in different cities. These cases further illustrate different critical elements in the business models applied and successful forms of stakeholder interactions.

Abstract [en]

Purpose

Sustainability approaches across product supply chains are well-known, while similar knowledge on transport supply chains (TSC) is limited. The purpose of this paper is to explore sustainability approaches and managerial challenges in extending sustainability across a TSC.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents a case study of a TSC with a shipper, a third-party logistics firm and a hauler. Each actor’s views on sustainability-related communication and relations with other TSC actors are analyzed through the lens of agency theory.

Findings

Each dyad in the TSC reveals different, more or less collaboration-based approaches. Challenges are revealed, including the lack of shipper understanding for the TSC context and the use of immature contracts, which disincentivizes sustainability compliance. The multi-tier study object reveals the silencing of distant actors and the need for actors to take on mediating roles to bridge information asymmetries.

Research limitations/implications

Combining literature perspectives (relations, communication and agency theory) provides a deeper understanding of the approaches applied and identifies different challenges. The inclusion of agency theory reveals principal problems such as information asymmetries between agents and less-informed principals and suggests complementary labels of supply chain actors.

Practical implications

Practical contributions include the highlighting of managerial challenges, which can aid managers in extending sustainability across TCSs.

Social implications

The case study method offers insights into collaboratively improving sustainability in supply chains (such as using contracts), thus having social and environmental implications.

Originality/value

The paper narrows knowledge gaps about managing sustainability among logistics service providers and analyzes data from multi-tier actors.

Logistik spelar en viktig roll för e-handelns miljöpåverkan och e-handelns framfart medför att konsumenten i allt större utsträckning kan, och vill, påverka den miljömässiga hållbarheten i logistiken. Särskilt i den senare delen av försörjningskedjan, det som ofta kallas sista milen, så har konsumenten stor makt att påverka.
